Black and Brown
>> Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Ok, now less vanity. Do you ever find yourself shying away from certain types of clothes or color combinations? Well, this outfit is a double whammy for me. I'm not much of a lace wearing girl, finding it too girly, and I also tend to avoid pairing brown and black. When I was younger I highly disliked the color combination, but as I've grown I've found myself drawn to the tricky color coordination of brown and black and also navy and black, too. It's a pesky pairing that needs to find a perfect balance. I'm not sure I achieved it here, but I think I'm learning a bit more with every attempt.

I love brown and black combos, but I agree that it can be tricky! You definitely pull it off though, and yes, your eyes are super pretty in the first shot! ;) My eyes are brown, so not so much variety for me, but it's all good haha!

i am also exceedingly picky about black/brown - you're right, it has to be the exact balance. but don't fret! i think you've done it very well!
i've got hazel eyes so mine change constantly, too! i think its more fun to have changing colors than the same all the time :)
I tend to steer clear of pink, peach and yellow: my inner indie girl screams ever time I go near them!
My husband also has colour shifting eyes but of a blue variety: if his ever go green I shall know he's Hulking out!
I too usually shy away from black and brown combinations. I can never find the right brwon to go with my black. I really like this combination that you have here. It works well together.

for someone who doesn't normally wear lace or brown and black together, you did it so wonderfully in this outfit! you look so preppy! i wish my eyes changed colors instead of always being brown.
Brown and black are an awesome couple, yes!

I absolutely love this outfit. Everything about it!
I always shied away from red and pink together, but I'm now starting to come around.
my eyes change drastically too, but I find it depends on the time of day. Late evening/early morning, they're blue. Afternoon they're green, like yours.
Lately I find myself wearing color combos I also used to loathe, like red & navy. I used to think it was too patriotic, but I find they can be darling. Eggplant & chocolate are another fave of mine right now.
I adore your skirt, brooch and shoes! The whole ensemble is lovely!

Ahh love the Splendids! I am yet to break mine in yet but you have inspired me.
I always shire away from wearing pants as I am a very hourglass shape so pants seem to make my hips look giant. I do love the new styles of pants that are out at the moment though so at some stage I'll try some on and see if they work.

your eyes do look amazing in that first photo! I never liked having brown eyes..too boring! You look so so pretty!
I absolutely LOVE this outfit! Your pairing of black and brown is just perfect, the shapes are very elegant and somehow the lace comes off not too girly! Plus thank you, of course :) x
Maria, you definitely pulled off both looks here. The skirt looks great with all the other pieces balancing it out so it's not over the top girly. Your legs look amazing in that last picture by the way. The pin is so cool as well! Love love love!
i lovee this outfit,, the whole entire outfit!! i love the heels and the blazer most!!
xoxo
Such a lovely outfit! I think the black and brown work really well, and the shoes are fab! a good look for Fall x
I've also only come to appreciate this color combo recently, and I gotta say I can't get enough of it! It's super chic and elegant especially for work. (: and you look adorable in that lace skirt Maria, perfect with your pretty curls -- which by the way are getting quite long. I absolutely love it. (:
I tend to shy away from short dress/skirt lengths (even those acceptable for the average girl, I think). I don't know, I think I am just way too insecure about things...jiggling in places. Haha.
Love that outfit ~ it looks perfect on you!! And those lacy anklet socks! *dies* They are sooooooo cute/awesome/perfect with those shoes!
I tend to shy away from denim in any form except for jeans. I have this idea that it's too tacky and bogan. So I do not wear it at all really. >o<
xox,
bonita of Depict This!
I think this is the first time I've seen you wear lace, Maria! It's lovely though on you:)
And I think we bought the same asos purse!
xx
Love the pics Maria, the black and brown combo looks lovely, especially with your green eyes! Also, hate to be cheeky but I bet some of your Britich readers may be able to help us with a competition we're running over on our blog Louder Than Silence - we're trying (in vain) to track down a girl whom we photographed at the Vintage at Goodwood festival but we don't know a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g about her! This is a super cute outfit and I don't think black and brown clash. I mix the two all the time, I love navy and brown together to!!
great outfit! you have beautifully matched brown and black- all the textures in the outfit look so good together.
the brooch is so cute
I completely agree with you, there's a perfect balance pairing dark colors, I didn't liked it myself a few years ago but now, brown and black is one of my favorite combinations, and you really look lovely. The lace, the beret, the socks, the platforms, that lipstick...perfect!
Maria, that skirt looks fabulous on you!! What a perfect outfit for it. I love the DD swaps. Its so exciting to see how everyone styles the different pieces.

super look, j'adore j'adore, et encore plus tes chaussures.
Je te trouve trĆØs jolie.
this is the perfect portrait of fall, it's outfits like this that make autumn my favorite season! so lovely. your eyes with the deep lipstick is stunning as is the outfit.
i actually love brown and black together! i tend to shy away from anything that sparkles- sequins, beads, etc. i always fear looking like a combination between a flapper gone wrong and a hooker haha.
your eyes are a very pretty green. i take notice when other people have green eyes such as myself as it's very unique and pretty. also, your outfit is really cute..reminds me a bit of eloise.
I think you balanced brown and black quite nicely here. Two thumbs up.
Well you pull off lace AND black and brown perfectly! And the thing about your eye color is funny, mine are the same way! When I was little they were just blue, but now they are either blue/grey or green. It makes a person confused about what their eye color actually is!
I love your pin, and you seem to have mixed the black and brown awfully well! Here's to adventure and stepping out of your comfort zone. For me, that's wearing bright colors. Eeek!
cute brooch!
Brown w/ black is one of my favorite color combinations for Fall. I, too, used to think it terrible, but in the past 3-4 years have really grown to love it when the weather begins to cool. You wear it very well! And I hardly consider you to be vain, Maria!
It looks like fall in these pictures! I've had trouble with the black and brown combination too. I think it just have to be the right shade of brown. Or you just have to do it and act like you know what you're doing, ha. With that said, job well done here. You also managed to make a lacey skirt not look overly girly, just the right amount.
Now, I have to say that I'm quite jealous. Brown hair and green eyes is my wish list color combination. Both my parents have hazel to green eyes and dark hair. I ended up with dark brown eyes and dark brown hair. Sigh. Your eyes look amazing! Self indulge in that all you want. That's some well deserved eye love.

I shy away from skirts. I just don't feel comfortable in them. Also, I don't much like shorts either.
Lovely accessory!

I love this outfit, and think that you found a great balance of black and brown!
Your eyes are beautiful! Mine don't really change color, but they are a unique honey brown color. In other words, light brown. :)
I love the pairing of brown and black, how funny! I find myself gravitating towards it. Maybe I'm drawn to it because of its pesky nature.
I shy away from polka dots of any kind, as well as the color pink.

That's hilarious! First off, your outfit is adorable! You're working the black and brown... but I too, have had a hard time putting those two together! I think the only thing that's allowed me to go there is my leopard print ballerina flats and mixing black with brown leather- like a belt cinched around the waist! Purple and red are a combo I'm not fond of either- eeek.
Happy Wednesday to you!
you are gorgeous! Love how you styled the skirt! I too used to greatly dislike the colors brown and black together, but now I love them ^.^
the brown and black here look very very nice together. I always agreed when I was younger about mixing them. I love how uniformish this look is. It is really pretty. I think the pin brings this outfit together so very nicely.
It is okay to be vain now and then. . .you are gorgeous so it makes sense.
yey for winning the giveaway!!
I think you did a wonderful job with the lace, black, and brown combo; such a lovely Fall outfit! I actually love black and brown... I usually shy away from any bright colors (yellow, orange, certain pinks). I see people all the time pull off these colors, but I'm fearful of looking silly.
I think you've managed to come up with a great combination of colors. Including your eyes, hehe, which are indeed very pretty. The shades are perfect for low temperatures, I think.
You look great with that skirt; you should wear lace more often! As for items or colors I tend to avoid ... I look horrible in grey and I don't usually buy brown clothes either. I've been told yellow is a difficult color to match, but I have a yellow dress and love it.
Hope you're adapting back to your routine! Hug!
Miki.
I love this outfit, the shade of brown and differing texture of the skirt and jacket look great together. I've always been put off by navy, I don't know why, probably because I have a lot of black clothes so I find it difficult to match with things, but I'm exploring other colours on me which I never used to do.
I love the black and brown combo - you make it so stylish instead of a faux pas! I'm now inspired to try it myself. Oh and I love your bag!

Beautiful! I love black and brown combos. Done right it gives a great retro edge
x
black and brown with a bold lip is always perfect. You look great!
...and I have the Splendid platforms too. They look cute with socks.
I actually like black and brown combos and this shoot proofs that it can be really chic. The skirt doesn't look too girlish at all - I think the jacket and shoes added a bit of classic touch to the look..
This is so darling and makes me unbelievably excited for some fall weather!

I'm the same, I don't really do black and brown. I do wear a lot of navy though, so I think I can make it work with almost anything. I'm trying to wear less black in general though!
This outfit is AMAZING! Gothic and definitely seasonal. I actually thought the skirt was a really deep maroon, which would also be awesome!
Xxx Leah
you dont think you achieved it? I think it looks great. and yeah you have an aamzing eye colour. If I could change my eyes from brown I would defo go a vibrant green
