Pantene Beautiful Lengths Challenge- Natural Hair
>> Friday, June 11, 2010

You may or may not know this, but I have naturally wavy/curly hair. Some days I straighten it and some days I let it go crazy. Either way, I try to treat my hair with care, which means only shampooing two to three times a week, and using only conditioner to clean my hair on the days in between. My other huge hair care secret is taking a daily multi-vitamin. I swear it makes my hair grow faster and stronger and let's not forget the amazing things it does for the rest of your body.
So here's my little guide on how I style my wavy hair.

Step 1: Clean your hair. If you're going to use shampoo, first put conditioner on your ends for protection and only shampoo your scalp. If you're going to use only conditioner, really work it into your scalp focusing on your hairline, temples, crown and neck.
Step 2: Lightly towel dry hair by grabbing different sections of your hair and carefully squeezing. Try not to squeeze up because this will ruffle the hair cuticle causing it to frizz.
Step 3: Use leave in conditioner to protect the hair before gently combing into place. How you set your hair when it's wet, is how it will dry.
Step 4: In the same way that you towel dried your hair, apply hair gel, focusing on not disturbing the waves/curls.
Step 5: Air dry or if you're in a rush, use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer. Make sure the settings are on low for both speed and temperature.
Overall, it's pretty easy. Even if you don't have wavy/curly hair, you can create some movement by letting your hair dry naturally and the less you expose your hair to harsh treatment, the more healthy and beautiful it will be. Also, if you have bangs and want a more polished look, blow dry just your bangs using a paddle brush.

Happy Saturday!

I have wavy hair, too, and I use a similar routine, without the leave in conditioner because I never remember to pick some up!
I switch out the Suave with a soymilk based shampoo when I'm feeling fancy, or Pantene. I love Suave's prices, but I don't like the fact that they test on animals. :(
You have such pretty hair, and I hope to participate in the great lengths challenge once my hair grows out gets healthy again. :)

I'm following your blog now :)
I also have curly/wavy hair and follow a similar routine. I realize though that I have to be careful not to dry my hair carelessly by rubbing it with a towel...

Your hair always looks amazing buuuuut I did want to mention that I have a hair dresser friend who learned in cosmetology school that suave is bad for your hair. So just be careful! Good luck with growing it out =]
YAY I am so glad that you did this post. I love getting hair tips from you guys. I think you, Mel, and Christina are the most helpful with haircare because your are very detailed. Much better than a magazine lol :)
i have always wanted to grow out and donate my hair, but always run out of patience and cut it before it gets long enough. i am so proud of you for sticking to this challenge!
You have such a lovely hair you are lucky it curls so nicely, mine is just straight and boring. I would love to grow my hair for charity too! Not sure if the Pantene one is active in the UK though, may have to look into that!

Great tips Maria! Definitely going to have to try them... also have naturally wavy hair.
Love your hair! It's so beautiful :)
Awesome tips. I'll keep in mind the one about the bangs.
I wish I had naturally wavy hair or hair that would wave even just a bit. You look gorgeous.
This is a fantastic post!
I have very wavy natural hair, however, often it just goes flat. I'm so envious of how nice yours looks, and always wonder how you do your hair.
Thanks so much for sharing for beauty secrets! :)
ooo wow!! I love your hair!! I wish mine was wavy! xxx
Hey, this is great! I was just wondering what would be a good shampoo to try. I picked up Aveeno Nourish + Shine conditioner lately and while it was pricey (here in the Philippines) I loved what it did for my hair.
I shall keep an eye out for Suave now. ;)

I'll definitely try this out! I do only wash my hair every other day but I've not tried conditioning it every day!
