My Bow Wedding Ring
>> Monday, June 21, 2010
So many people have been curious about my bow wedding ring, that I thought it was time to give you a little history.

Cole and I were married in Dec 2oo2, but before that we were engaged for three years. So if you do the math, that makes me only 18 and Cole 19 when we decided we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.

Being poor college students, we didn't have very much money and what little we had, we spent like typical college students, meaning mostly on beer. During this time I had a few different engagement rings. My first was a $5 dollar ring that Cole had bought on the spot to propose. My second was a more expensive simple silver band. And for my third, Cole had spent almost a year saving. This time it was an actual engagement ring that also had a matching wedding band. Since he was only working part time during school and making just barely above minimum wage for back then, the sacrifice truly meant so much. I absolutely cherished my ring.

As happy as we were, many people tried to knock us down by making fun of my beautiful ring. They would comment on how small the diamonds were and calling it names like "sweet" and "delicate." It used to absolutely infuriate me. I was so proud of my ring and the sacrifice Cole had made for me and here everyone was tearing it down. However, the more they made fun of it, the more I loved it.

In May 2003, Cole and I graduate from Michigan State University and promptly moved to Boston, MA. This was our first time living away from Michigan and in a "big" city. It was all very intimidating and a bit frightening. It was during this time, in my first post grad job, that I met a girl whose mom was a jewelry designer. This girl had the most amazing bow ring I had ever seen. Knowing how much I loved the ring, my coworker asked me if I wanted her mom to make a different version for me.

My first thought was "Yes, please!" my second was "no way can I afford that." So I came home telling Cole all about this magnificent ring. I could tell he was thinking about it seriously and not just brushing me off. After some thought he told me to find out how much it would cost and if he could save the money, he would give it to me for our first wedding anniversary. I was of course ecstatic. So I got it all squared away with the girl, finding ways here and there to make the ring more affordable, and after a few short months, the ring was mine.

There was only one hitch, the ring was supposed to go on my right hand, but it was too small. Since there was no way I parting with it, even to have it resized, I started wearing it on my ring finger with my wedding band and engagement ring. After some time, I grew tired of wearing so many rings on one finger, so Cole and I decided that since the bow ring so truly fit my style and personality, that I should wear it instead of my wedding rings. Now it's such innate part of me that I don't think I could ever imagine wearing anything else.
Don't forget, I'm offering 20% off everything in my O Captain shop!!
Yours,

How very sweet! I wondered about it yesterday, it's just darling!

That is such a sweet story-and yes, the bow seems to fit you so well. I'd much rather have a ring with meaning than a giant rock! but I'm not much of a jewelry kinda girl :) Great post :)
Thanks for posting on this personal subject! It's nice to know about the bloggers whose blogs you read every day. It's such a lovely story, and such a nice thank you to Cole, who does such a great job on your photos.
Cheers to the both of you!

I adore the ring! This is a lovely story. It is the most unique wedding ring I've ever seen, so you should love it every bit that you do! Love, Annie.
This is the sweetest love story ever! I pretty much pictured a short film while reading and looking at the pictures. High five to Cole! What a boyfriend & hubby!!

P.S. - The bow ring is really dvrling and I can see that it totally suits you.
interesting... rings are the one piece of jewelry I do not wear (don't like my hands and use them too much), but they are also sadly what I consider the prettiest type of jewelry too, esp. on pretty hands. I love bows too, and think people should demonstrate their commitments however way they want.
what a nice story...
This is the cutest, sweetest thing I've ever read. :)
That's probably the most adorable story ever. Young love at it's finest is always an inspiration for me.
Amazing story. So sweet. You sound like such a wonderful couple. And that ring is perfect for you! I love hearing the stories behind these things!!
xo
my wedding ring is a bow as well!
Very cool indeed! Engaged at 18, wowza! How long had you known each other before then?
And also, out of curiousity, what did you study at college?
Haha, questions questions, I just find all this stuff very interesting!
oh my god. while i was reading this post..i felt like you were explaining me and my husband's story. i am 18 and married to the love of my life. we have been together since i was 14 and him 16, we got engaged when i was 17, and got married at 18. we are very poor right now and everyone calls my ring 'adorable' and 'sweet' as you mentioned. I immediately teared up reading this because I am going through what you went through. I am so close to my rings even though everyone bashes on them. I hope to find run into the perfect ring like that someday. You are such a huge inspiration to me and reading this just made me feel even closer to you. Sorry for such a long comment..haha I just got a little emotional.
Thank you for sharing your story, Maria.

Thanks for sharing! Its such a sweet story! :)
I've only been following your blog for a few months (I think) and the bow definitely suits you.
These pictures are so nice, and your ring is absolutely beautiful!

hello, i'm a new visitor to your blog and i'm guessing TONNES of people have already told you this but you look like zooey deschanel. ESPECIALLY in that pantene thing on the sidebar, where the wallpaper reminds me of the wallpaper in her apartment in (500) days of summer. just wanted to let you know :)
What a lovely story Maria. I have always loved your ring, and it's great to know the history behind it!
It's nice to know that you didn't let what people thought get to you. Sometimes it's hard to listen to other people that give you advice/criticism when they don't even have their own life sorted!
And I think it's the most adorable and unique ring I've seen.
:)
What a beautiful story! My husband and I got together when I was 18, married 13 years later (we don't rush things!), and our rings are plain silver bands. I like the simplicity of it and it sits nicely next to my only other ring, another silver band with 3 amber pieces in, that he got me one anniversary.
so you have super cute bags.
just sayin'.
what an amazing story and such a beautiful ring!! it must mean so much to you
That was such a delightful story. And the ring is really beautiful. :-)
Love your hat and your bow ring too!
I'll take a look at the shop!

wow! that is so sweet... what a love story. I love that ring bow. So pretty!
thanks for sharing your wonderful story, it's really refreshing to find like minded people who don't feel then need to measure their love by the size of a diamond!
It's absured that if the size of the rock is of that much concern rather than the story, love and memories behind the ring; then how sad and unfulfilled must their lives be?
I love your ring and I prefer it to huge rocks but all that matters is that you love it - and you do so it's a happy ending
♥
That is such a beautiful story, Maria. Thanks for sharing. Hearing stories like yours makes me less cynical and little more hopeful and optimistic, I really appreciate stories like yours. Every day I feel a little more optimistic, because despite some bad stuff happening around me recently... I know there are good things and relationships that work out and some relationships persist, because the people in it are willing to try and make it work... that is beautiful to me. Your bow ring is so you and it warms my heart to know that Cole is such a wonderful, loving and supportive husband to you. Bless the two of you :)
Maria! the new header its Beutiful! really adorable! and your outfits and pictures are cute and original as always!
lots of love sweet <3

I am one of those that truly admired your ring. So pretty and the story behind it makes it all the more beautiful. I have by choice an unusual wedding band with a vintage miner's cut diamond and wouldn't have it any other way. I love your unique style.
ntaw, so sweet story.. perfect to tell to your grandchildren:D!
I love the story behind your gorgeous ring. It makes it even more special than I could imagine (and yes it definitely suits you to a tee!)
Such a sweet and romantic story! Thank you for sharing, Maria! My husband gave me a bow ring too for our anniversary and I will always cherish it. It's so beautiful and it's so me! I think bows trump big diamonds. Hehehe! At least for me. ;)
Heartwarming story - you two belong in a Golden Age Hollywood romance!
cute ring! and loving the purses
that's such a ridiculously sweet story and your ring is gorgeous.
Such a sweet story. Its amazing how sometimes the perfect things just find you. The ring is beautiful. And it's good to know that jewelry designers can make just about anything.
So glad you posted on it!

I've always wondered about your darling ring so I'm so glad you did a post about it! It's such a cute and sweet story about how the bow ring came about. It's very you ^.^
I have always wondered about your ring...it is amazing...that is such a great romantic story!
My engagement ring is small too because we got engaged in college, but since I am a small person, it suits me. I call it elegant. ;)
what a great story! the ring couldn't be more you :D
my nana has a vintage bow ring she wears on her pinkie. it's one of my favorites of hers. i thought of it when i noticed your ring in yesterdays post.
The funny comments made about your ring sound so infuriating. I guess some people get so caught up in the idea that rings have to be big and flashy.
I love the story of yours because of the history and it is just very *you*.
Thanks for sharing!

i have been wondering about that! so beautiful, and what touching history. :)

wow so beautiful! :)

Aww what a lovely story! I love your bow ring and I think it is great you use it a your wedding band! I was engaged at 18 too but it took us 4 years before we got married and plenty of people tried to disparage us from getting married and because Jon didnt actually buy my engagement ring, but that was my choice, but he often felt awkward about it!

last year around christmas time i saw an adorable bow ring from tous jewlwey. when i subtly hinted to my husband to get it for me for christmas... ehhehe- he was unable to find it anymore. still on the hunt for one though... i will not give up! :) your ring is beautiful. :)
What a darling anecdote. You really are lucky to have such an adoring and doting husband! And I agree, that ring perfectly fits your personality and style.
Isn't it weird how strange, nosy and rude people can be about engagement rings? While I lived in France, NO ONE asked me about my ring. Right when I got back to the south in the USA, ppl started commenting again. Hmmm...
I think the bow is such a lovely ring and looks great on you!
It's so nice to hear the history behind your engagement ring! It really is such a sweet story. I think it's sad that people are so caught up in the details of things such as how big a ring is or the cut or whatever and not on the fact that two people are choosing to marry and spend their lives together.
That's the cutest story ever and the ring perfect on you! :)

Oh dear, your story made me a little emotional because it's very similar to mine in many aspects. I met my hubby when I was 18 and we decided to get married when I turned 21, he was 24. We've been married for 6 years and these have been the happiest years in our lives :) and I relate to your story also because my hubby bought my engagement ring while he was a college student and he had to save for a year to pay it. That ring means a lot to me. The ring has very tiny diamonds and yes people used to look at my ring the same way people looked at yours, but as you, I treasure my ring because for me it's not about how expensive or how big something is, I treasure things because of their sentimental value. Your bow ring is just perfect for you!
Thanks for sharing this lovely story and I adore your photos!
xoxo

Aw, my boy and I know a bit about being knocked down, but it really does encourage one to appreciate themselves more, and say heck yes I adore this bow ring! Stick it to the man sort of thing. Thanks for sharing Maria :) x
What a great story Maria!!!! I've always wondered about your bow ring!
:)
Wow the ring is absolutely lovely. Just like you!
Maria that is so romantic and sweet, I nearly teared up!
Don't ever let anyone make you (or your rings) feel inferior! I love that you loved your wedding set more and more with every condescending remark! what a spunky wonderful girl you are!
xoxo, Pretty Shiny Sparkly
That is such a sweet story! I sometimes find myself imagining a wedding ring to be more... personal than just a silver band. Your ring and story is so adorable and expressive! It's truly inspiring.
what a sweet story! that ring definitely suits you!
This is such a sweet story and your ring is perfectly suited for you. Thank you for sharing this!
I think that this is such a romantic story! And your ring truly is adorable!
I enjoyed reading this story. Very sweet and interesting.
that story is so sweet. your bow ring is beautiful.
i loved reading this, and yes that ring is so beautiful!
What a wonderful story! I think it's beautiful and suits you so well!

that is the cutest story! it is so great that there is so much history and meaning tied to this ring. And the fact that you two knew you wanted to be together so young is so incredibly romantic! :)

Oh thank you so much for sharing that story with us, I have commented before on that ring, it's lovely to know more.
xoxo
Love the story and the ring!
its beautiful! ive never thought the look of traditional wedding rings would suit me so this is an inspiration! not that im getting engaged anytime soon... the story is lovely also!
I definitely think that bow ring looks so much cuter and shouts LOVE a lot more than a huge hunking piece of carbon on a band. A personalized ring sounds so much more romantic than just going with something standard that you can buy at the mall.
Your husband sounds lovely.
